Petaling Street is one of the must visit place in Kuala Lumpur especially if you are a bargain hunter. Also known as the Chinatown of Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Street (Jalan Petaling in Local Language) is well known for not only cheap clothes and accessories, but also street bars, hotels, sumptuous local food and drinks such as Wantan Noodles, Hokkien Mee (noodles in dark gravy), BBQ fish, Curry Laksa noodles and the famous chill longan drinks just to name a few.
Getting to Petaling Street from KL Sentral is easy by using the city LRT Train (Kelana Jaya Line). All you need to do is to take the LRT train to Pasar Seni Station which is only one station away. Here is how.
How to go from KL Sentral to Petaling Street (Chinatown)
First, from KL Sentral, head to the LRT platform. Purchase a ticket at the vending machine or ticketing counter with Pasar Seni station as your destination. The fare is only RM1.00 (RM1 is about US$0.30).
Once you have purchased the ticket, head to the platform to take the train heading towards Gombak direction. Pasar Seni is the next station of KL Sentral. Waiting time should be short because LRT train arrives every few minutes. The journey from KL Sentral to Pasar Seni Station is also less than 5 minutes.
From Pasar Seni LRT Station to Petaling Street
Upon arriving at Pasar Seni LRT Station from KL Sentral, get off the train station and walk out of the station. Do not head to the pedestrian bridge that cross the Kelang River. That is the wrong direction. You should take the opposite exit that lead you to the street. Walk along Jalan Sultan (Sultan Street) heading to the west direction for about 400 meters (5 minutes) as shown in the map below.
You will see the following entrance to Petaling Street on your left when you walk along Jalan Sultan. Turn left to get into Petaling Street!
Here you are! You have reached Petaling Street from KL Sentral by taking the LRT train. If you prefer to be dropped off directly at Petaling Street, the other option to get here from KL Sentral would be by hiring a taxi!
Taxi from KL Sentral to Petaling Street (KL Chinatown)
Petaling Street is only about 3km from KL Sentral by car/taxi. The budget taxi fare from KL Sentral to Petaling Street is about RM7 to RM13. If you want more comfort, hire a blue colour executive taxi. The fare for executive taxi is around RM12 to RM14.
There are usually many taxis at KL Sentral if you need to hire one (exception is during peak hour in the evening 5pm-7pm when traffic jam is bad and more so if it is Ramadhan fasting month because this is the time to break fast muslim drivers). If there is no taxi at the KL Sentral station, you can call a taxi by using a mobile apps called “MyTeksi” on Adroid or IOS. This app allow you offer some tips to “lure” taxi drivers who are further away to pick you up at during peak or odd hours. This apps not only works for hiring a taxi at KL Sentral, but also any location in Kuala Lumpur.
